Safe Nights - Homeless Ministry
South Potomac Church will be hosting the homeless of Charles County through Safe Nights - March 14 through March 21, 2021. This program, which is sponsored by Lifestyles of Maryland, Inc., runs each day from 7:00 p.m. through 7:00 a.m. during the coldest months of the year (November through March) to give the homeless citizens of our county a safe, warm place to sleep and food to eat. There are numerous restrictions to the program this year due to COVID-19, and the Benevolence Team is requesting donations of items and volunteers as follows:
Sleeping overnight - At least one (1) person to stay overnight each evening. The volunteer would not be sleeping amongst the homeless participants, but in the sanctuary. You would be a SPC attender on-site for any emergency. There is also a Lifestyles’ employee on-site all night. Show up at 9:00 p.m. and provide your own sleeping bag, pillow, blankets, etc.
Sandwich makers - Each evening after dinner, take sandwich orders from the participants and make sandwiches. The items for the sandwiches are provided. Show up at 7:30 p.m.
Dinner providers - An individual, home group, several friends/family members, etc. would provide, prepare and deliver a full cooked dinner (or a portion of a dinner) for a particular night and deliver it to SPC no later than 5:00 p.m. It can be prepared at your home or in SPC’s kitchen. Benevolence Team members would then prepare and serve individual dinners in disposable containers to the dining area for each participant. No serving for volunteers!! Dinner consists of a salad and dressing, entrée, vegetable, starch (potato, rice, etc.), rolls and dessert.
Vacuuming dining area - Each morning after breakfast, the dining area needs to be vacuumed, chairs wiped down and new table cloths put on dining tables. This should begin around 8:00/9:00 a.m. There would be no interaction with participants.
DONATIONS – The Benevolence Team is accepting monetary gifts (cash or checks written to SPC) to defray the costs of hosting Safe Nights. The COVID-19 restrictions have changed the way food is served and have increased our costs tremendously.

We are in the process of making some changes to our app to make it even more friendly to our users. Download the South Potomac Church app and stay connected.
